As a student when first time we listen PERIMETER, it’s not obvious to us as what is
this used for or why we need to study this.
In this vlog we will learn about Perimeter and check with some examples how perimeter can be useful.
Let’s Begin
What is Perimeter?
Simply saying, If we start from one point of rectilinear shape and move along the path and reach the same point. Path traced is called the perimeter of the rectilinear shape.
Mathematically if we sum up all sides of a rectilinear shape, result will be the perimeter of the shape.
Let’s check this with some examples.
EXAMPLE 1:
Consider a rectilinear shape of 4 sides say a SQUARE.
If I put my pencil on point A and go to B on line AB, then from B to C, C to D and finally D to point A.
I traced the Perimeter of Square.
As we mentioned above, Perimeter is SUM of all sides of a rectilinear shape.
Perimeter of Square = AB + BC + CD + DA
Let’s understand this by using some values.
So AB = 2m, BC = 2m, CD = 2m, DA = 2m
Perimeter of Square is SUM of it’s side
Perimeter of Square = AB + BC + CD + DA
Putting the values of it’s respective sides, we get
Perimeter of Square = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2
Perimeter of Square = 8 meters
EASY !
EXAMPLE 2:
Consider a rectilinear shape of 4 sides say a RECTANGLE.
If I put my pencil on point A and go to B on line AB, then from B to C, C to D and finally D to point A.
I traced the Perimeter of Rectangle.
As we mentioned above, Perimeter is SUM of all sides of a rectilinear shape.
Here, Perimeter of Rectangle = AB + BC + CD + DA
Let’s understand this by using some values.
AB = 4m, BC = 2m, CD = 4m, DA = 2m
Perimeter of Rectangle is SUM of it’s side
Perimeter of Rectangle = AB + BC + CD + DA
Putting the values of it’s respective sides, we get
Perimeter of Rectangle = 4 + 2 + 4 + 2
Perimeter of Rectangle = 12 meters
EASY AGAIN !
Likewise, for any such rectilinear shape whether it has 4 sides, 5 sides or n number of sides. Perimeter can be calculated as sum of it’s sides.
How Perimeter can be used in daily life?
Say we have a square or rectangular park or of any rectilinear shape.
If we need to make wire boundary or fence around the park and we have to calculate the cost of the fencing or boundary.
Perimeter has to be calculated first.
Example
Say cost of fencing 1 meter is INR 50 and We have to calculate cost of fencing a Square Park of side 500 meter. It can be calculated as
FIRST, find perimeter of square which gives complete length of the park to be fenced with wire.
Perimeter of Square is sum or it’s 4 sides
so, P = 500 + 500 + 500 + 500
P = 2000 meters
Now cost of fencing 1 meter is INR 50
So Cost of fencing 2000 meters is INR 2000 x 50
Cost of fencing 2000 meters = INR 100,000
Likewise, If I run around a Square park of length 200 meters and I take 5 rounds. We can easily find how much length I covered or ran.
First calculate perimeter of the Square i.e. sum all it’s sides.
Length covered in 1 round = 200 + 200 + 200 + 200
Length covered in 1 round = 800 meters
I take 5 rounds and here length of 1 round is 800 meters,
So Length covered in 5 rounds is 800 x 5
Length covered in 5 rounds = 4000 meters
Same way we can calculate for rectangle or other rectilinear shapes.
Do You Know?
Square – All sides of Square are same in dimension or size.
As you see in above example, AB = BC = CD = DA = 2 meters
Rectangle – Opposite sides of Rectangle are same in dimension or size.
As you see in above example, AB = CD = 4 meters and BC = DA = 2 meters
We hope you understand the Perimeter of Rectilinear shape and how we can use it in daily life.
In the next vlog, we will see how to calculate Perimeter of Square and Rectangle.
